BEGINNING THE ALASKA HIGHWAY: DAWSON CREEK

These are some of the miles and miles of birch trees (I think) that we saw along the route from Grande Prairie, Alberta to Dawson Creek, British Columbia. You can see that spring has not quite sprung here in the north country. Volunteer clean up crews were all along the highway. Today must have been the big day.
Then we took a stone in the windshield from a truck. Well, now we've had the blown tire and the stone chip in the windshield....(just like last AK trip) hope that's all for this trip.
Many times along the road we have seen, in the farming areas, these rows of little buildings.
All old, and all in a row. We are wondering what is the purpose. Perhaps I'll find out...
We have now driven over 2100 miles on our trek. We are over half way to Willow Creek State Recreation Area, where we will host for 2 months.
Again the obligatory picture at the beginning of the Alaska Hi ghway. Last time we took the picture from the other side. Had to do it different this time. Then we did a walking tour of Dawson Creek. This town became a huge boom town during WW II and building the highway. And all of the supplies for building it came through here.

A picturesque hotel just a few paces south of the mile marker "0".
Over the past few years various folks have painted beautiful murals on some of the buildings.

Perhaps you can see that there is a map on this one and I am pointing to where we are... Right at the beginning of the Alcan Highway.
Christ resting in front of another mural.
Depicting events during the construction of the highway.

And finally to our campground.

If you look close, you can see our camper. The campground just opened up today. No more Camp WalMart for a while. We did a few things here, had a salad, then put the camper down so we could go back into town (1/2 mile) and go do laundry, and go to church.

This sign was hanging in the laundry. I was amuzed and had to take a picture. The manager came over and asked why we took the picture. I just had to tell her that we're from a place that this kind of sign wasn't needed...then she saw my humor. And, yes, this laundromat had showers for folks to use, too....as do all of them from here on and up through Alaska...because not everyone has indoor plumbing.
Then on to church. We thought that this was a very unusual architecture. Then we were sitting out in the car, wondering why nobody was comming to church. My phone said 7 pm...and it gets time from the satelite...so it HAD to be right. Right? Wrong.
We finally saw somebody pull up to the parish sc7ool across the street. She told me that Mass was at 7:30....I said it was shortly after 7 and I thought I'd see a few folks around. Then she informed me that we lost an hour between Grande Prairie and Dawson Creek. So, instead of going back to the campground to cook dinner, we just dropped into DQ. The second time going to church had to be the charm. Met their delightful priest, from Nigeria.
So, until we connect again....along the Alaska Highway.....
