JUNE 22: SUCCESSFUL FISHING TRIP

My little fool proof method of getting the pictures posted in order really went by the wayside today....but enjoy, here comes the pics. Dawson really did a good job fishing. This was not a "pose" ; he really had a fish that was giving a good fight. I was glad that he didn't get hauled over-board by these big hallibut. All in all he caught about 10 fish, but they are only allowed to keep 2; so the rest get set free.
We stayed in this cozy little cabin located just before we drove onto the “spit”. It wasn’t fancy, but it was clean and cozy…and had a wonderful shower.

Are we having fun yet? These are their big fishes. HOWEVER these are not really big halibut; they are about 25#. Bigger get caught all the time. As a matter of fact, just last week one was caught out of Seward that was 330# and 7 feet long! That one hit the news!

Of course....here is a picture out of place. Snapped on the return home trip. In all the different times we have driven past the Turnagain Arm on the way to the Kenai Penninsula, it has always been low tide. All we have seen is the sand bars of the Arm. Almost couldn’t recognize it with no sand bars showing.

The guys were just heading down to the Naughty Lady, the fishing boat that holds 17 fisherman. But they only had 9 and Chris thought that it was crowded. This bar behind them is a “spit” landmark. Quite famous….at least around here.

This is just a picture of the Naughty Lady returning to harbor. But I thought it was a good contrast in front of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Amersterdam, that was in port at the Homer Spit.

Returning with their “haul” of halibut.

Having a quick lunch before we hit the road for the LONG trip back to Willow; 6 hours seemed very long since we just drove down the day before!

All of a sudden on our return trip from halibut fishing we came upon these dall sheep. By the time we got the truck stopped, the group (flock?) of 6-8 were dispersing. So I didn’t get a real good pic.

I showed the pic to Chris and he said: “yup, that’s a south end of a north-bound ewe.” I laughed so hard that I had to share it.

After a “long hard day” Dawson watches as Chris cleaned the pile of fish. For some reason the deck hand on the Naughty Lady didn’t like taking the skin off. We think that was just an excuse. That was John Henry.

King Salmon combat fishing begins Friday night at midnight. I'll know more about what this is when I see it....

So, until we "connect" again....
