May 17: I SAW THE REAL DEAL ! ! !

Happy Birthday, again, Jacob....this is the right day, this time....
This morning, I was returning from the shower and washing dishes....heard Chris call to me to go on a hike. Put on my mountain boots in a hurry....and climbed this hill to join Chris. Low and behold.....the real "Great One".....all 20320 feet of her. Mt. Denali or Mt. McKinley.
Here she is in all her glory. Too bad for the haze. But that's just the way it is. One of the rangers hoofed up there to confirm the sighting. Yup....there she is. They said that later in the day it would cloud up more, and we wouldn't be able to see it. It has it's own weather.

Was I happy? Mt. Denali is right behind me here; I'm pointing to it. But, can't see it and get me too. I had to use the telephoto to get the above pic of the mountain.
I just thought that this was a nice picture. That's part of Nancy Lake behind Chris and down the hill.
Just another beautiful picture of Nancy Lake and Chris.
We found this cabin on our hike. It was so picturesque sitting there above the lake. It was aboned and open so we walked in and looked around. There was quite a big 3 shelves of paperbacks. (Ya do a lot of reading up here...) It hadn't been used for a very long time. We later discovered that this was private property. When the park was made, there were cabins all over the place that are private. And there they sit...beautiful in the ruggedness.
This was just another good picture of the thing outside that the owner used to cut fire wood. The stack of wood was there so long that there was moss growing on it.
All this, and it's not even noon. Chris is making more frames for park signs, and I am varnishing them. The rangers go through this thing every fall of taking down a bunch of signs before winter so that vandals don't shoot them up; then they put them up again in the spring. The vault toilet closest to where Chris and I will be camping was vandalized. Sure hope that gets fixed soon!!!!
Who knows, I may get another chance to blog later today. It's a positively beautiful day; lots of blue sky. One of the best days since I've been here. Lovin it.
Until we "connect" again.....

  1. Theresa, My mom and I are really having a good time keeping up with your blog! My mom is planning on driving up to AK this summer. She lived there in the 60's during the quake. Nice pictures...
