Hello everybody. This is going to be a "pictureless" blog, because I am not on WiFi. We are using the computer int he visitor centor in North Battleford. The pictures will come later. We are in "the land of living skies" as their license plantes say. Saskatchewan means "swiftly flowing river", and there certainly are many, but we have seen mostly oil wells and wheat fields for as far as the eye can see.
Yesterday's blog:
On Tuesday night we stayed at the Governor's Inn & RV Park in Carrington, ND. It was quite a nice stop after 235 miles since we left St. Joe, MN and visiting old friends from Alaska, Ron & Roseanne. It was an ordinary hotel: looked a lot like a Holiday Inn. The RV Park was nice, clean, but ordnary. But, they had a fine work out room...possibly with as many as 40-50 pieces of equipment. Can ya believe? Way more than even the Y has. Then, they had a water park, jogging track and jacuzzi. That we enjoyed...a lot. And I had a chance to get on my favorite, the eliptical (sp).
Continuing on toward the Canadian border, we drove along a river basin (an Indian name that I couldn't recall), south of Kenmare, ND. Along the 5-10 miles with rolling hills on each side there were man numbers on the sides of the hills. (will put pictures up later....so remember that....)
All made of rocks painted white, perhaps 20-40 feet high, each of them, and arranged in the numbers; ie, 86, 95, 98, ....and on and on. Then we saw "state champs 03" in one rock arrangement and ta dah! we figured out that the local high school classes must all make their marks on the local hills. It was interesting and fun.
We entered Canada through North Portal, SK at about 3:30 p.m. (later figuring out that we just changed time zones to mountain time. Now we're 2 hours behind Indiana. When we get to Alaska we will be 6 hours behind home.
We are in the bustling industrial town of Estevan, Saskatchewan. The last 20 miles we saw lots of strip mining. Hadn't seen that since Colorado. There are no campgrounds here (oh....one that opens on May 1 ) So... Camp Wal Mart to the rescue. Good thing we are here, because we needed to change the tires on the boat trailer. One of the tires is just wearing funky. So, here they have a Tire Center. We were gong to buy 2 new 13" tires....but they won't sell them or put them on a boat trailer....only on a car. Go figure.
Thursday, April 29
We left Estevan and Camp Walmart at 5:45 a.m. It was a beautiful clear blue sky. Last night one HUGE blow came up suddenly at about 6:30 p.m. It literally drove us into the camper much earlier than we would have wanted to, and we shook for several hours and rained some. Therefore, we decided to hit the sack early...like 7 p.m. Having slept for 7 hours, we were bright eyed and busy tailed at 3 a.m. and hit the road at 5:30 a.m. On the way to Regina, SK the scenery was total flat land. We saw half a dozen antelope (I have pictures!)
By noon the rains began. We have traveled 1600 miles thus far. That leaves us a little over 2000 miles to go. We just heard (while here in the visitor's center) that there is snow ahead, on the way to Edmunton, Alberta. But, it's just a skiff of snow. Hopefully that will remain just that.
There is a campground in this town, but once again, doesn't open until May 1, day after tomorrow. So Camp WalMart to the rescue!
Until I get a chance to post pictures with WiFi....this will have to do.
So, until we connect again.....
And Happy Birthday Andrea.
