Boy, did they taste good last night! Can't fish any more until we eat the rest.

At the campground, the water is not that good. So we found a wonderful place to get fresh water just a couple miles from town….nice, cold and fresh.

On Monday the blue skies came out and the picture opportunities were awesome!
This is the sunset over the Chilkoot Lake, where our campground is.
This next one is the Chilkoot River coming out of the lake
A fair picture of Haines: as you can see it’s not a big town. Picture taken from across the parade grounds at historic Fort Seward.
Chris spent an hour the other evening picking blueberries along the road in our campground. That mess of blueberries gave us wonderful blueberry pancakes for two mornings! And what was even better: we had fireweed jelly (made from fireweeds in Willow Creek campground by Laela & Jim, the other hosts) for on top! It was simply wonderful!
As we were leaving the campground this morning to go get a shower in Haines, Chris noticed this very blond grizzley across the Chilkoot River.
We had a fun day at the Southeast Alaska State Fair. The rain certainly didn’t hinder the crowd; lots of fun, music, food, logging competition, etc.
This was loads of fun to watch. Everybody got wet! It was cold and rainy all day…and these folks were getting wet! I wonder if any of them had pneumonia the next day.
No need to explain this whole race…but it definitely took lots of physical strength. The had to run across these logs, back across, carrying heavy cable….and do some other stuff with it. Rough.
These guys had to cut a slice of this 5’ 2” diameter log off. The best time was 1 minute 40 seconds! These guys had cut a few logs. We knew the diameter of the log cuz Chris went and measured it!
This was very dangerous….had to balance on a log in the air; start the saw; then walk to the end of the log and cut the end off. Looked scarey to me! (see next picture)
Looks like suicide to me.....this end is like, 8 foot off the ground!

These Alaskan women are made of sturdy stuff….
With the exception of last Saturday for the State Fair, the weather has been quite nice here in Haines. But yesterday and today have been fabulous: loads of sun and blue sky. It’s 76 degrees today and downright hot if you are standing in the sun. OK, OK….you say we don’t know what hot is….those of you “outside”….but the lack of humidity is what makes this so nice.
Thoroughly enjoying the time with Chris fishing, us walking around town, relaxing, visiting with other campers, taking pictures, reading, playing dominoes. Can’t beat this. But I am missing all of the grandkids…our treasures.
So, until we “connect” again…
