June 6: ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY IN GOD'S COUNTRY

Good evening everyone. It has been a positively glorious day in Alaska today. I think the temperature was up to about 68 degrees. Very nice.I've told you before that Denali has it’s own weather, and this photo shows that. Her head is in the clouds.
This is the path to Willow Creek and the Susitna River. It’s amazing how much these trees have filled out since we got here. No leaves to full foliage…beautiful. I walk this path several times a day. It's not far to the river.
Last night Chris fished up to about 11 p.m. when this pic was taken. It’s about ½ hour before sunset in this shot. Yesterday, when Chris was down here fishing in the morning, a moose came out on the sand bar and watched him fishing for about 15 minutes. Of course Chris didn't have a camera... Now we are trying to make sure that both of us have a camera at all times....just for times like that. The Kings are just about starting to come up the creek. The crowds are picking up. Lots more people fishing. We're hearing of more folks catching Kings.
This is a 11 yr. old kid, Josh, who'se been here a lot and knows his stuff about fishing. He was up till 5 am fishing. So he’s sleeping all day today. This little guy will talk your ear off. I think Chris is making fish chowder tomorrow night and Josh and his Daddy will be comming over for dinner.
Chris took this picture of one of the beautiful houses around Nancy Lake, while he was fishing. We didn’t expect to see these nice homes. Conjecturing that they are summer homes or commuters from Wasilla. Planes land on this lake, as they do on all the lakes; the people commute that way. Last night a guy landed on the lake and waved Chris down as Chris was going past him in his boat. He got out on the float of the plane and asked Chris if he had seen a dock floating around on the lake. His dock had broken loose in the winter and left during the thaw. This could be a real hazard to float planes.

My favorite “Burger Bus” serves “Bad Ass Coffee” and here’s proof. You can see how you order at the driver’s window. Don’t really know what kind of coffee that is cuz I haven’t had any.

When the time came for a hair cut, one of the other hosts who has been here for several years , gave me the name of Suzie. Here’s the beauty shop that was tucked behind the trees along the Parks Highway, at mile 73.5 (that’s how everything is marked around here. It means that it is 73.5 miles from Anchorage.) No sign on the Parks; just an orange ocean net bouey…looked like an orange balloon from the road. Good thing I knew what to look for….

This is the beauty shop where Chris & I got hair cuts. It was fun; the beautician, Suzie, was unique. This picture is here because of the dog. See it in the lower left? Nice dog….but strange for a dog in a beauty shop. We were commenting, and Suzie’s husband said: “if someone doesn’t like the dogs in here, there are plenty of other beauty shops to go to…”. We liked them…and her.
We turned around behind the beauty shop….and caught this unique picture: two grizzley bear hides and 3 caribou antlers on the back of the beauty shop. Ya won’t see that in down town Angola on the back of the beauty shop…
Just blew dry my hair….don’t like the hair cut. I guess I can’t expect a lot out of a beauty shop with a grizzly skin on the back….
Now that the Easter decorations are gone, you can see the inside of the church we are attending a bit better: St. Christopher's church in Willow. On the way to church this morning a two year old moose charged across the road in front of us. I couldn't fumble my camera quick enough to get that picture. Just keep trying....
Can you see how small this parish hall is….4 tables. It is about the size of a classroom.
We had a pot luck today after Mass today; very friendly folks. Somebody even brought a casserole with halibut in it. Chris thought it was super. I was hard pressed to figure out what to bring for a pot luck....and have it not be a bag of cookies or chips. I took some "suddenly salad" cold pasta salad that I made last night. The next challange was what to serve it in. So, I just took it in a 2 quart cooking pot. Not very classy, but it worked.

This is a pic of the pastor; can’t remember his name. He’s from the Philippines. Very nice guy and speaks very good English. I think he’s a citizen now and he belongs to this diocese now and can’t be pulled back to the Philippines now.
Today is a gorgeous day. Sunset is at 20 minutes to midnight tonight! Can ya believe???? Sunrise at 4: 20 am. I just never see the dark any more. That’s less than a 5 hour night, and it’s not dark all of that time either….perhaps an hour or two of semi darkness. Wierd.
What a wonderful experience this is to be here in Alaska. Lovin every minute. Tomorrow I think I will go and paint some boards for picnic tables, so that Chris can rehab more of the tables. He's worked on quite a few so far.
Enough for now. Until we connect again....
