May 12; Venturing Out

Good morling all. Writing to you from the parking lot of the American Legion Post 20 in Kenai, AK. We blew like crazy here last night, rain and cold. Then it calmed right down. The wind was right off of the Cook Inlet. Quite a blow.

You already know that we have an extra week to knock around before host orientation....so we decided to go to Talkeetna, about 40 miles north of camp.

This is the view of down town....and most of the town. Although only some of the shops were open, all over town people were bustling, hammering, cutting, sweeping, putting new decks down and getting ready for the tourist season. A bunch of busy worker beas.

I've had this picture (minus me, of course) on the desk top of my computer for the past 6 months....and now I'm in it!

Cute little shop. The lady made these cute little wall hangings, blankets, etc. Very pretty and very expensive.

At noon we stopped in a nice little restaurant to have some caribou chili and caribou burger, and nachos.

There are signatures all over the wood of the restaurant. If you look real close you can see signatures and grafiti. Everyone who comes in here adds their signature. No we did not. We are told that there are some signatures of world class mountain climbers on these halloed walls. Impressed me! As I told you before, this little town is the jumping off place for mountain climbers on Dinali, and for "flight see-ers".

The outside of the restaurant.

The sign of the restaurant, with our waiter peeking over. Could eat in or out....too cold for out.

An historical house of early resident. Not going to bore you with details.... :-)

Unique store, has everything in it. It was moved from another location about 90 years ago; took 3 days, and was open all three days of the move. Now, that's dedication. This is where I got coffee, and could go back and get refills all day. Took advantage of that.

This little town is very dog friendly. Tommy was able to go in just about every store. Only Nagleys she was not able to because it's a food store. They told me that all winter their dogs come in and out....but now that tourist season is approaching they can't do it. I suppose health dept. would frown; but in the winter the health dept. can't find the place. Chuckle, chuckle

A cache in Talkeetna. This is a demo of one where folks used to keep their meet....so bears couldn't get it....!

This is just a picture of a post card that I sent to somebody. But had to take a picture of it first. It impressed me because this is a picture that a 14 year old girl took from about 20 feet away! She's got more guts than me!

This is a picture of the Turnagain Arm, south of Anchorage. Must drive past this to get to the Kenai Penninsula. Here is the second largest bore tide in the world, second only to the Bay of Fundi, off of Maine. Little did I know when I found out this two years ago, I would see the Bay of Fundi last year. The tide, if the moon and all the conditions are in order, the tide comming through a small opening from the Cook Inlet can rush down the Turnagain Arm in a 6 foot wall. People have been known to surf it. What you see above is the glacier silt left when the tide is out. This is like quick sand and will suck a person in. So, it cannot be walked on.
Saw lots of snow driving along toward the penninsula.
Not a good picture....but a HUGE snow blower cleaning up the parking area, ready for the on-slaught of tourists in a week. They probably have an army of these bad boys.

A picture of our reindeer brats from last night (not Rudolph) being cooked in this nice toaster oven on loan from Charolette. (thank you, sweetie)

These brats had jalapenos in them. Yummy...
We're heading out to walk through old town Kenai this am. Want to take some pictures of the 150 yr old Russian Orthodox Church. All of their holy icons, ect. are in the visitor center while a huge renovation is going on. Will take pics of that.
Where else we're going....who knows. The day is beautiful and can see the mountains across the Cook Inlet from here. Mt. Redoubt, the volcano....remember the news last year?... is one of them. Will get some pics of that.
So, until we connect again.....
